  12. Thank for your valuable lessons in electronics.
I have following query about LEDs.
LEDs known to be very much energy saving light source compare to other light bulbs.
But we get two type of LED bulbs as aluminum heat sink type and plastic bulbs without any heat sink.
These aluminum heat sink type bulbs get heated and waste energy as heat.
Why cant we design the power supply get the maximum light instead of wasting energy as heat.
If we say 10W bulb do we get actual 10W light source while energy is wasted as heat.
How come these plastic LED bulbs operate without any heat sinks while plastic prevents releasing heat to atmosphere.
I would much thankful to you for your explanation regarding this.

    1. :) Yeah LED is the most efficient light source at the moment, but that does not mean it's 100% efficient either. A perfect light bulb must emit some ~600 lumens per watt, but no bulb has come to that ceiling yet. Look at some bulbs you have and you'll see this lm/W value of the particular bulb you have. Still a long way to go ahead.

One thing you must bear in mind, and that is you can never ever get away with heat generation (at least even with the current cutting-edge technologies). You can easily understand how an incandescent bulb generates much much heat (than light) due to Joule heating. In the light generation mechanism of LED (not only LED, just about any junction diodes for that matter - be it signal, rectifier, zener, back, or whatever diode), holes and electrons recombine at the junction, and along with light and other electromagnetic radiation, it automatically generates heat as well. That's unavoidable. you know light, heat, and infrared, uv, and radio signals are all the same electromagnetic radiation. The type of radiation emitted by a diode depends on the semicondutor materials used and its construction method. So, basically you can make a diode emit "more" visible light by adjusting material, doping level, and construction, but still heat (heat is some part of infrared radiation in fact) is there. That's how even efficient LEDs produce heat.

I am afraid you have viewed at the case in a wrong perspective/way. It's just not the aluminum case/base that must be blamed, it's the very LED itself that should be blamed for heat generation, if you will. haha... aluminum base there is just a heat shunt (or sink) where it conducts the heat inside the diode to the ambient air, or otherwise the led will fry itself. Aluminum base is your friend there, not the foe. it's required.

As you rightly said, some leds have metal base, while some with plastic. Always the plastic variety is low power, and high power leds must have metal bases to dissipate heat effectively away from the bulb. Even low power ones produce heat still, but normal air dynamics in the environment is sufficient to cool it, so no need for an external heat sink.

    2. hm... you have another question that I have not answered - about designing a power supply... well, it's not valid argument. it's not the power supply that leads to heat generation here. it's just how led's and junction diodes work that produce heat. however good and perfect power supply you would design, you still see leds produce heat. if you wanna stop heat completely, design a new technology. :)

energy is energy whether it is light, uv, electromagnetic, heat, etc. so, you must take in all forms of energies in your calculations when finding out efficiency. Therefore, if your 10W energy input (to the bulb) wastes 1W as heat, then your light energy must be 9W - that is 90% efficient.
